FELLOWSHIP

"My fellow non-profit leaders, activists, survivor leaders, and community leaders. We can no longer afford to ignore ways to leverage technology in the fight against human trafficking. Traffickers don't shy away from technology and neither should we. Unleash your inner technologist!"

Ehb Teng, Executive Director @ ATHack! Inc.

In 2016, we ran an experimental ATHackathon to bring together non-profits / activists and technologists for the purpose of discovering unique solutions to human trafficking issues and build community awareness of the issue.

VIABLE PROJECTS WERE DISCOVERED

We considered the ATHackathon a success as we were able to bring together two sectors that seldom cross paths and form meaningful and diverse collaborations. However, we discovered a new problem. Without proper support and funding, the viable projects would struggle to create long-lasting impact.

This is why in 2017 we are pleased to announce the launch of the

ATHACK FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The ATHack Fellowship Program is designed to provide support and funding to non-profits, advocates/activists, survivor leaders, and community leaders in discovering innovative tech solutions to human trafficking issues.

The program will run from October - December 2017 and will be open to all U.S. based non-profits, activists, survivors, and community leaders working to bolster anti-trafficking efforts.

WHAT WILL THE APPLICATION PROCESS BE LIKE?

The application process will occur in 3 phases:

PHASE 1

MARCH - AUGUST 2017

*All U.S. based non-profits, activists, survivors, and community leaders are invited to apply through our application portal and propose a tech project to fight human trafficking.

PHASE 2

AUGUST 2017

We will be shortlisting the applicants down to 6 projects. We will then schedule a Design Day consultation for each project to discuss what it will take to go from proof of concept to MVP (minimum viable product).

PHASE 3

SEPTEMBER 2017

Each of the 6 project teams will be given 1 month to provide a design mock-up and pitch deck detailing how they will bring the product to market and what kind of long-term impact they wish to achieve.

The top 2 projects selected for the fellowship program will be announced in SEPTEMBER 2017

*Subject matter knowledge or expertise is recommended

DO I HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO CODE OR DESIGN?

Absolutely not! Part of the program is to pair you up with a code and design team in order to help you turn your project from idea to reality. All you need to bring to the table is your domain expertise, a willingness to learn, grit, and determination.

HOW BIG CAN MY TEAM BE?

Your team can be between 1 - 5 members. Don't be intimidated if you are only a team of 1. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide the necessary resources to ensure success of your project.

We may make exceptions for larger teams. However, we do not recommend exceeding 5 members as this has the potential of causing too much team disruption. Too many 'cooks in the kitchen' can cause chaos.

WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS CAN I PROPOSE?

There are no limits on what kind of projects can be proposed. We are looking for a full spectrum of projects from moonshot ideas to ideas that improve processes. All we ask is that every idea has a consideration towards better data collection and that it adheres to the rule of DO NO FURTHER HARM.

WHAT DOES "DO NO FURTHER HARM" MEAN?

"DO NO FURTHER HARM" means that any project you propose should not revictimize those we are trying to help. We must do our best to respect survivors and not force them to relive the trauma they have been through, along with their right to privacy. We must always stay cognizant that, in the fight against exploiters, we don't become exploiters ourselves.

WHY IS THERE AN APPLICATION FEE?

The $100 application fee is to cover the administrative cost of processing each application.

WHAT WILL THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM BE LIKE?

The fellowship program will be an intensive 3 month program.

MONTH 1

OCTOBER 2017

Focus will be on rapid prototyping of each project towards an MVP (minimum viable product) that can be tested in the field.

MONTH 2

NOVEMBER 2017

Focus will be on user testing and validating need. Teams will apply lean methodology and determine if a project pivot is needed.

MONTH 3

DECEMBER 2017

Focus will be on polishing of product towards a public Alpha launch and produce a strategic marketing strategy.

I SEE THAT ATHACK INC. IS BASED IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. WILL I NEED TO RELOCATE IN ORDER TO ATTEND THE FELLOWSHIP?

No. We live in a connected digital age with many tools online that can facilitate support and mentorship for your project. We only ask that you stick with the program schedule once we roll it out.

WILL I BE FREE TO OWN MY PROJECT AFTER THE FELLOWSHIP ENDS?

Yes. After the fellowship ends, you are free to fundraise for your project and develop it further as you see fit. All we ask is that you allow us to feature your project as part of our fellowship portfolio.

WILL I GET ANY ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FROM ATHACK AFTER THE FELLOWSHIP ENDS?

Depending on what is needed, we can provide technical, design, or business support. We also offer our services as a fiscal sponsor for a minimal fee. All you have to do is ask :)
